Gap solitons in metamaterials
نویسنده
چکیده
Electromagnetic localization and existence of gap solitons in nonlinear metamaterials, which exhibit a stop band in their linear spectral response, is theoretically investigated. For a self-focusing Kerr nonlinearity, the equation for the electric field envelope with carrier frequency in the stop band where the magnetic permeability μ(ω) is positive and the dielectric permittivity ǫ(ω) is negative is described by a nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation with a dispersive nonlinear term. A family of standing and moving localized waves for both electric and magnetic fields is found, and the role played by the nonlinear dispersive term on solitary wave stability is discussed. S. Spatial solitons in nonlinear left-handed metamaterials
We predict that left-handed metamaterials with nonlinear response can support both TEand TM-polarized self-trapped localized beams, or spatial electromagnetic solitons. Such solitons appear as singleand multi-hump beams, being either symmetric or antisymmetric, and they are modified dramatically by the hysteresis-type magnetic nonlinearity and the effective domains of negative magnetic permeabi...
متن کاملSubwavelength discrete solitons in nonlinear metamaterials.
We present the first study of subwavelength discrete solitons in nonlinear metamaterials: nanoscaled periodic structures consisting of metal and nonlinear dielectric slabs. The solitons supported by such media result from a balance between tunneling of surface plasmon modes and nonlinear self-trapping. The dynamics in such systems, arising from the threefold interplay between periodicity, nonli...
متن کاملKnotted solitons in nonlinear magnetic metamaterials.
We demonstrate that nonlinear magnetic metamaterials comprised of a lattice of weakly coupled split-ring resonators driven by an external electromagnetic field may support entirely new classes of spatially localized modes--knotted solitons, which are stable self-localized dissipative structures in the form of closed knotted chains. We demonstrate different topological types of stable knots for ...
متن کاملHigher-order effects and ultrashort solitons in left-handed metamaterials.
Starting from Maxwell's equations, we use the reductive perturbation method to derive a second-order and a third-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation, describing ultrashort solitons in nonlinear left-handed metamaterials. We find necessary conditions and derive exact bright and dark soliton solutions of these equations for the electric and magnetic field envelopes.

[1] We analyze nonlinear properties of microstructured materials with the negative refractive index, the so-called left-handed metamaterials. We demonstrate that the hysteresis-type dependence of the magnetic permeability on the field intensity allows changing the material properties from left to right handed and back. Using the finite difference time domain simulations, we study the wave refle...
